How to Fast with Endometriosis: A Faith-Based Guide to Fasting With Your Cycle

If you have endometriosis and have wondered how to approach fasting from a faith perspective, I want to answer this thoughtfully. This is not about weight loss for me. This is about honoring God, understanding the body He gave His daughters, and using wisdom in how we fast with chronic symptoms.
My personal approach is shaped by three things: Scripture, the voice of God, and an understanding of how the female body works through the cycle. I believe these three things can work together beautifully.
First, Not Every Fast Has To Look The Same
One of the biggest things I want women to understand is that fasting does not have to be one-size-fits-all. Every fast does not have to be completely no food, especially when things are chronic.
But if God is specifically calling you to a fast, He will sustain you in it. If He tells you to do a no-food fast, then obey Him.
But if fasting is something you are practicing regularly, I think it is wise to understand the different kinds of fasts available to you and to consider where your body is in your cycle.
This isn’t fear-based thinking, this is using wisdom.
The Different Types Of Fasts
Absolute fast
This is the most extreme type of fast: no food and no water.
Because of how intense it is, I believe this should only be done for a short period of time and with great care and supervision, especially if you have health concerns.
But like I said, if God clearly told you to do an absolute fast, He will sustain you.
Normal fast
This is fasting from food while still drinking water.
Depending on the length of the fast, you may need to be especially mindful of hydration and make sure there are minerals and electrolytes in your water.
Partial fast
This is abstaining from certain foods or drinks for a set amount of time.
A Daniel-style fast is one example of this, and for many women, especially those navigating endometriosis, this can be a very supportive option depending on where they are in their cycle.
How I Personally Think About Fasting Through The Cycle (especially if you are fasting for healing)
I do not approach fasting the same way at every point in the month. I pay attention to what phase of the cycle I am in and what my body is more likely to need. (Unless God tells me otherwise)
Days 1–10 And Days 16–19 Of Your Cycle
Days 1–10 is a time in your cycle where a longer fast can be really supportive.
During this phase, your body is focused on producing estrogen, and without healthy estrogen production, ovulation cannot occur. One thing to be mindful of here is that if you are eating a lot of carbs during this time, that can keep spiking insulin, and insulin can become too high for estrogen’s liking.
When insulin is too high, it can suppress healthy estrogen production and, over time, even contribute to excess testosterone. That is where you start getting into that more classic PMOS (formally PCOS) scenario.
This is one reason I like longer fasts (anywhere from 13-72 hours) in this phase. It can help support insulin balance and create a healthier environment for hormone production.
Days 16–19 are another great time for a longer fast (over 17 hours).
This is another point in the cycle where hormone production dips, which makes it a really supportive time to fast in a deeper way. This is also when you can tap into one of the major health benefits of fasting: autophagy.
Autophagy is basically your body’s clean-up system. It is how the body clears out old, damaged, or dysfunctional cells so it can repair and renew itself more efficiently.
That is why this phase can be so powerful for a longer fast. It can support gut repair, cellular clean-up, dopamine, immune reset, and healing in the organs that help manage your hormones.
Days 11–15 Of Your Cycle
This is where I would shorten the fasting window (13-15 hours without food, max) and lean into more of a Daniel-style fast and really nourish the liver and gut, because those are two of the major organs that help your body metabolize and clear hormones well.
This is a great time to focus on whole foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains, while still making sure you are supporting your protein well too.
Some of the foods I would prioritize more during this time are:
- cruciferous vegetables
- leafy greens
- bitter lettuce or bitter greens
- sesame seeds
- flaxseeds
- fermented foods
- wild salmon
- berries
- green apples
- green tea
- dandelion tea
- spices like turmeric, cumin, saffron, and dill
For me, during these days, this is not a good time to be extreme. I focus on supporting my body with whole foods and would maybe do a no bread or no sugar fast.
Day 20 Until Your Bleed
This is the phase where I would be most cautious with a no-food fast unless I felt clearly called by God to do one.
This is typically when progesterone is most needed. Progesterone is known as the calming hormone. It helps communicate safety to the body. During this time, I would be very careful with anything that may create extra stress on the system.
Part of the concern here is that if cortisol rises, even a little, it can work against progesterone at a time when we really need progesterone’s support. That is why I would be cautious with fasting or carb restriction during this phase.
Instead, this is the phase where I would focus more on:
- nourishing the body
- reducing stress
- creating space for rest
- deepening time with God in gentler ways
For some women, this may be a better time for a no sugar fast or a digital fast rather than a stronger food fast. That could mean no desserts, social media, no TV, less noise, and more quiet time with God while still eating nourishing whole foods.
Foods I would lean into more during this time include:
- sweet potatoes
- beans
- squashes
- lentils
- black beans
- oranges
- grapefruit
- lemons
- limes
- bananas
- mangoes
- papaya
- blueberries
- raspberries
- pumpkin seeds
- brown rice
- quinoa
My Faith Perspective On This
My belief is simple: if God calls you to fast, He will sustain you in it.
But I also believe that if fasting is a regular practice in your life, wisdom matters. Understanding your body, the types of fast available to you, and the timing of your cycle can help you fast in a way that is both spiritually meaningful and physically supportive.
Sometimes obedience looks like a full food fast.
Sometimes obedience looks like a partial fast.
Sometimes obedience looks like stepping away from noise, distraction, and stimulation so you can give God your attention.
A Note On Water Fasts
If you are doing a water fast, I would be mindful of hydration and minerals.
One practical thing I would suggest is adding minerals back into your water so your body is being supported while you fast.
What I Believe Fasting Can Do
Fasting can be powerful both spiritually and physically.
Spiritually, it humbles us. It can bring clarity, make us more sensitive to the Lord, and expose what is going on in the heart.
Physically, it gives the digestive system a break and creates space for the body to focus on repair and restoration.
I also believe fasting can be deeply cleansing in both body and spirit. It can help us slow down, pay attention, and surrender things we have been carrying that God never asked us to keep carrying.
My Bottom Line
If you have endometriosis, I would not treat fasting like a rigid formula.
I would ask:
- What kind of fast is God calling me to?
- Where am I in my cycle?
- Does my body need nourishment right now or is it in a good place to handle a stronger fast?
- Is this a better time for a food fast or a digital fast?
- How can I honor both my faith and the body God gave me?
You do not have to choose between being spiritually serious and being physically wise.
You can do both.
Final Encouragement
If you are newer to fasting, start simple.
A shorter fast or partial fast may be the best place to begin. Over time, you can learn what supports both your walk with God and your physical health best.
Note: If you have significant symptoms, a complicated health history, or tend to feel worse with fasting, use extra caution and get appropriate support rather than pushing through just because you feel like you should.
